SUMMARY:Summer Immersion: Symbolic Incompleteness\, from Gödel-Tarski to Lacan – Guest Speaker Giuseppe Longo
DESCRIPTION:The 2026 Summer Immersion focuses on developing a writing and reading of a symbolic incompleteness that persists across various mathematical and logical theories. Unfortunately\, this incompleteness is presented in a technical writing that remains inaccessible to the nonspecialist. Our aim is to both de-codify this writing so that it can be made readable to the non-specialist and to de-mystify the reference to Gödel’s incompleteness theorems when they are extended into fields to which they were not originally associated. To accomplish this goal\, the Immersion often invites people who are noted in their respective fields to present their work to a ‘lay audience’\, not as an act of vulgarization\, but to raise questions and problems that may not have arisen in their intended applications. Giuseppe Longo\, a mathematician-logician\, researcher\, and director Emeritus at the CNRS (Center national de la recherche scientifique)\, has been invited to this Summer Immersion to present his work on incompleteness in the manner of Gödel. \nThe Summer Immersion meets every weekend\, Saturday and Sunday\, for four weeks. Beginning the first weekend of the 4th-5th of July and ending the last weekend of the 25th-26th. \nThe Immersion is open to anyone with no prior background or experience\, just a certain persistence in working with others to clarify a reading and writing. All texts\, both original and published\, will be provided online. \nThe Immersion will be held on Zoom and is limited to 15 people. A donation of $60. per person is recommended\, but anyone with a financial hardship may request to the administration for a pass. \nIf there are any questions\, please write to: places@topoi.net \n
